In September of 1999, I was lucky enough to meet a real rock legend.
I was working for a company in Langley, B.C. called Thomson Technology and on the radio Rock 101 was giving away tickets to see Jeff Beck in concert and a chance to enter a draw for a Fender Stratocaster which would include front row seats to the show and a backstage pass for a meet n' greet afterwards. The radio call went something like this:
DJ: Hi!! Congratulations you are the seventh caller.
Me: Sweet!!
DJ: Ok we have 2 questions if you get one right you are going to the show get them both right and your name is entered in the draw.
Me: Sweet!!
DJ: Name this tune!!
Now, by this time I have a grouping of rock guru's around me willing to lend support. Fortunately I didn't need it the song was Superstitious by Stevie Wonder, which Jeff Beck did the guitar work on. Rookie Stuff...
Me: Superstitious!! Stevie Wonder!!
DJ: *plays clip of hands clapping*
DJ: Next question.. "Roadstar, Roadhouse, Jaguar and Thunderbird what do they all have in common?"
Ok, this is kinda the bad part of the story because I have NO IDEA.. like no clue AT ALL.
hmm... Roadstar, Jaguar and Thunderbird.. that's car stuff. Roadhouse.. that's a shitty Patrick Swayze movie. What do they have in common? Nothin'!!
Me: Ummmmmm
DJ: We need an answer
Me: I'm working on it!!
At this time everyone in the back was hurtling out suggestions one of the girls upstairs yelled down, "CAR". I thought she said "guitar".
Me: Guitar??? (I said weakly)
DJ: Is that your answer?
Me: You tell me!!
DJ: Is that your answer?
Me: Ummmm yes... guitar. (I added dejectedly)
DJ: *plays mad scientist clip* "I am the smartest man alive"
Apparently Roadstar, Roadhouse, Jaguar and Thunderbird are all Fender Guitars..
who knew?
So I won tickets to see Jeff Beck and then a week later for the Grand Prize Draw I was the grand prize winner of a beautiful Jeff Beck - Fender Stratocaster guitar.
